Reading Response- Makayla Bruce
The Phenomenon of Place and Envelope:
A phenomenon is described to be the Character of place expressed in different scales, strengths, and durations of time. These occurrences can be provoked, but most of the time it is a natural occurrence or reaction to the place. The time of day, sounds, light, tectonics, seasons, etc. are all examples of phenomena. I even would consider grouping/ crowding as one; where the arrangement of space pushes people together or away from another. In terms of envelopes, they go beyond the restraints of a project or system and refer to a disciplined and un-disciplined form. Applicable to how we design places for people, phenomena can be used to enhance and tailor responses inside and outside of the built form–which is why we should consider it early in the design stage.
