Welcome, Outline and Provocation
I would like to propose and discuss the following outline for the term:
Primary:
- discussion of shared economy and AirBnB
- project objection statement and theoretical background
- discussion of urban design/ urban architecture
- programming, individualized interests
- site visits
Secondary:
- zoning analysis
- Structural systems – CLT, steel, other
- Intro/Intermediate rhino (ARCH 610 and or its lab sections)
- Grasshopper elk and GIS tool workshops
Logistics:
- When to meet – Mondays, 6pm for 1 hour?
- Portland site visit soon?
- Seattle / Portland trip first week of January 2017? Jan 2/3 beginning. 5-7 days. Vancouver? AirBnB stay.
- GIS workshops this term, two. Similar to methods in Parametric Places and Barcelona Urban Design Program
- AirBnB global customer service visit in Portland
- Other stakeholders: Beam Development, City of Portland Planning and Sustainability, AirBnB

Fall Term from studio description V2.0:
Schedule and Products 1.0 Pre-design Phase – Fall Term
The fall term will have weekly meetings to establish the conceptual underpinning, site analysis and selection and programming analysis.
- Conceptual Research in the topic area and theoretical framework [diagrams, collages and writing]
- Programming and zoning analysis (max building envelop) including individual student site selection within a five-by-five class block area of Portland’s eastside waterfront. [charts and diagrams]
- Project goals and strategies regarding public space interface, example of Seattle Public Library (islands of privacy) versus Dutch Embassy in Berlin (limited access in and out of volume) [diagrams]
- Research of structural types including steel, concrete and mass timber (CLT). [text and diagrams]
- Parametric computation and urban computation workshops. [Grasshopper parametric tutorials]

Thoughts:
I Googled “Vicente Guallart Vall Daura.” Vicente gave me a tour with Jesus and Margarita from Aldayjover this summer!
Contrary to Apple’s headquarters in the suburbs (see Nike in Beaverton campus) where autonomy is about security, control and non-urban engagement to control all aspects of life.
Are these people working? Do they go home? Is this home? Is this an open and diversity space? Does it represent a way to engage a world that changes around us or one of control and artificial creation? Does it engage society or recreate society?
This lots a lot like shopping to me.
