China has seen an unparalleled amount of urban development in the last two decades, with building continuing through the recent global economic downturn.  Oregon students can assist in designing new cities and building complexes by interning at the Shanghai Xian Dai Architectural Company. Xian Dai is the largest award-winning architectural firm in China with over 4,000 staff.  It was responsible for master planning many cities, and design and construction of much of the Shanghai 2010 World Expo.  The company’s portfolio includes major developments in transportation, sports, cultural, commercial, residential, health care and education facilities throughout China.

In 2010, the U of O Department of Architecture established an exchange program with Xian Dai, with Oregon students going to Shanghai for summer internships and Xian Dai staff coming to Oregon for advanced study in sustainable design.  Xian Dai welcomes summer interns from U of O who would contribute knowledge of green buildings and sustainable communities.  The interns will work at Xian Dai as part of their project teams, and help design and planning teams to facilitate projects. Chinese language skills are not required.

Up to 4 students from U of O will participate in the internship for eight weeks.  The internship fee covers airport pickup, housing, visa expenses, tuition for a weekly language course, cultural activities and 24/7 on-site support.  Students have to pay separately for their travel arrangements, food and personal expenses. Those students with financial need will be awarded a Freeman Internship Fellowship (see http://caps.uoregon.edu/?p=3176) to cover expenses.
