Posted on March 18, 2016March 19, 2016 by Shane Trish sees a lamb that may or may not be dinner in a day or two. The lamb bleated and followed us all over the place. We requested chicken for dinner. Taken at the confluence of the Karakorum (behind me), Hindu Kush (dead center) and Himalayan (off the the right there), below me the Lion River and Gilgit River combine to form the Indus River. So it’s by no means the headwaters (follow the Lion up a ways) but it was pretty spectacular to see the start of this major river. A pathway on campus. I really like the campus; most social areas are outside (most of the year there is no rain). Professor Illyas and myself on a campus quad. Illyas gave Trish and I a wonderful tour of campus. One of the things we really liked about the place is that everywhere you go there are little wooden tables or benches or just patches of dry ground where groups of 3, 4, or more students are sitting and talking. While there are always a few students sprinting to avoid being late to class, you don’t see the speed walking, loner, head-phones in iphones out kind of students one sees in America. There is a very strong campus community here, and a very diverse community. Although most students are from Gilgit Baltistan, they speak at least seven prominant local languages and represent different religious sects (e.g. Sunni, Shia, Ismaili). And yes, I am wearing a pretty amazing hat and outfit. I had trouble getting these flags to cooperate. The one on the right is Pakistan’s flag, and the other is that of the University. I know, I’ve put these same mountains up a few times already. But it was sunny today! Also I learned these mountains are approximately 6500-6800 METERS high. Morning birding is confined to the courtyard. This is “truck art”– all the trucks are all decorated in elaborate bangles and paintings. It’s awesome.
Did you eat the lamb? I know you love lamb.
Wow amazing pictures! Those mountains are incredibly beautiful.
