From 7YB to N7DUX – HAM Radio at the University of Oregon
N7DUX
Historically speaking, the newly formed HAM radio club on campus is not new. Back in the day, and I mean “back,” the U of O had a previous club. The University of Oregon’s first radio broadcast call sign was 7YB . At that time, an unknown Mr. Woodward, the radio controller, would broadcast on 375 Hz to spread new of the University. That was in 1922. However, it just took a few more years for a club to form. In 1925, 7XG went on the air as the first official HAM radio club of the University. Over the years, I have met many UO students, staff, and faculty that have HAM radio licenses, but I haven’t heard much about radio clubs over those year, that is, until now. University of Oregon students, staff, faculty have now joined together for an updated club. Welcome to N7DUX! It is hard to imagine getting a better call sign.
The group is meeting twice a month via Zoom on the first and third Tuesdays from 5:00-5:30 pm. See the webpage for the link. So far, we have been talking about different types of radios and what to start with, training sessions to pass the licensing tests, and going out on a fox/bunny hunts to find a hidden transmitter that a member will stash somewhere in the area. Membership is doing well, and we bring in about 15 members at this time.
