RoboSub International Competition – San Diego

It was fun to check out the RoboSub competition at NIWC Pacific TRANSDEC, in San Diego this week. The event challenges students to build a submersible vehicle that can autonomously navigate an underwater obstacle course, passing through marked gates, touching buoys along the way, and dropping markers in appropriate zones. Teams from around the globe came to participate, including teams from universities and schools in China, Norway, India, and Poland; and from U.S. Schools including Georgia Tech, Arizona State, UC San Diego, and the University of Southern California. Here at the University of Oregon we haven’t participated, yet, but it certainly looked interesting, and like the ARLISS competition that our students went to last year, it’s really much more of learning experience than a competition as all teams work to support each other.
