Contemporary Conservation Issues in Africa – Wangari Maathai

Given that Nobel Peace Prize winner Leymah Gbowee just spoke at the University of Oregon last week, I wanted to high-light an exhibit I hosted at the Living Learning Center here on campus a while ago.  The exhibit on contemporary conservation issues in Africa covered issues from environmental justice to poaching of endangered species and focused on the work of Wangari Maathai (pictured center right), an environmental activist from Kenya and the 2004 recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize.  It is just amazing to see the work and dedication of these individuals.  Ms. Maathai is also a recipient of many other awards prior the her Nobel Prize including:

Sophie Prize (2004)

Petra Kelly Prize (2004)

Conservation Scientist Award (2004)

J. Sterling Morton Award (2004)

WANGO Environment Award (2003)

Excellence Award from the Kenyan Community Abroad (2001)

Golden Ark Award (1994)

Juliet Hollister Award (2001)

Jane Addams Leadership Award (1993)

Edinburgh Medal (1993)

The Hunger Project’s Africa Prize for Leadership (1991)

Goldman Environmental Prize (1991), the Woman of the World (1989)

Windstar Award for the Environment (1988)

Better World Society Award (1986)

Right Livelihood Award (1984)
