Palora, Ecuador earthquake 2/22/2019

Seismic data from today’s 7.4 magnitude earthquake in Ecuador.  Our seismometers (one in the Price Science Commons) picked up the 2:17 am quake signal at about 2:27 am PST, so about 10 minutes later.  Note that it took about 5 more minutes for the seismometer located in New Zealand (bottom right tracing) to pick up the seismic waves.  This discrepancy in the arrival time of the waves at different stations allows researchers to pinpoint the location and depth of the quakes.  Pacific Northwest Seismic Network
