Unit 09

After reading Comparing Cultures by Lessig, one question that I ask myself is how much power does the American society truly have in preventing powerful monopolies from happening? After reading how “we should provide protection from competition only where there is a very good reason to protect,” it made me want to learn just how protected our culture is from monopolies completely taking over American consumerism (Lessig). I agree that we should definitely limit their power.

  1. I think you bring up a great question in your response with how much power America actually has on preventing powerful monopolies from happening. I agree with you on limiting their power but how do we know when to limit it? How would America decide when is a good reason to protect? I challenge you to think about how we would make these choices.

  2. Our culture is one based on mass consumerism. A big reason for this is monopolies. They have come into our society and taken over almost everything. Our culture is now about monopolies and chains rather than local and independent. Monopolies took over long ago, now it is about taking that power back from them. In my opinion as long as monopolies have the upper hand our culture will no longer mature and grow because everything will be mass produced. Making everything the same with no way to express one’s individualism.

  3. Technology is a large part of our generation, it has changed the way we work and they way we interact with people. I think that through technology we are able to create our own voices and opinions. The internet provides the public with great ways of gathering data and information in order for us to create our own voice and opinion. I think without the internet people would not know what to do with themselves and we would not be knowledgeable of what is happening around us. I think that technology does define us and provides us with our own voice.

  4. I agree with your idea that we should limit the power of monopolies to a certain degree. While from another aspect, sometimes, monopolies also have some advantages there. In addition, you did a nice job on coming up the question about how to deal with the question that monopolies get too much power to control the market and we have to protect the competition. Thanks for sharing your idea about that.
