Biography
The practice and publications of Associate Professor Rob Thallon support architecture that is affordable, climate responsive, inclusive, and supportive of human activity through elegant design and client participation. He teaches courses in building construction and design studios with a focus on buildings that address environmental responsibility. He also serves as the Associate Dean for Administration for the School of Architecture and Allied Arts.
Thallon has authored two books on the detailing of light wood frame buildings: Graphic Guide to Frame Construction: Details for Builders and Designers (Taunton, 3rd ed. 2008), and Graphic Guide to Interior Details: For Builders and Designers (Taunton, 1998). With these two publications, Thallon thoroughly illustrates an affordable approach to long-lasting construction.
He has also co-authored Fundamentals of Residential Construction (Wiley, 3rd ed., 2011) with Edward Allen, FAIA; Graphic Guide to Site Construction (Taunton Press, 2003) with Stan Jones; and The Owner-Builder and the Code: The Politics of Building Your Home with Ken Kern and Ted Kogan.
Thallon’s architectural practice integrates site planning, landscape design, building design, and construction to achieve enduring, sustainable homes and workplaces. His residential projects have appeared in Patterns of Home (Taunton, 2002) and The Cabin (Taunton, 2001), as well as in Fine Homebuilding, Better Homes and Gardens, Sunset, and other magazines. In addition to single-family houses, his firm has designed wineries, commercial buildings, and several award-winning housing developments.
