Bell Bajao: An Introduction

What is Bell Bajao?

Bell Bajao (hindi for ‘ring the bell’) is an anti-domestic violence campaign that urges local residents to take a stand against physical abuse through simple acts meant to interrupt domestic violence.

To “ring the bell” is to take action to challenge violence or discrimination against women wherever you may see it or have the power to make change.

The campaign advocates for bystander intervention, respect and support for women in private and public places, education of effects of violence against women, and all social and political action which encourages women’s safety. The Ring the Bell campaign is a localized action each individual can take to interrupt domestic violence.

The campaign was launched in India on August 20, 2008. Now, based in India and the United States, Ring the Bell is one of Breakthrough’s multimedia campaigns which address global issues including violence against women.
