Program Eligibility
The program is open to students who
- Are US citizens or permanent residents
- Will have completed at least their first year in college or community college
- Identify as Native American/Alaska Native or have a family/cultural connection with American Indian/Alaska Native peoples
- Have at least one semester of undergraduate coursework remaining before receiving their baccalaureate
This program has no minimum GPA requirement.
Application Process
To apply you will need to fill out the online application. The application will ask you to provide contact information, schooling information, and a personal profile. You will also need to provide the following supporting materials:
1) A Statement of Purpose (2 pages, single-pace, 12pt font)
Please explain in your statement why you are applying for this opportunity. Our program broadly focuses on Indigenous languages and how linguistics can support the preservation and revitalization of languages. State your interest in and experience with any languages, linguistics, and STEM. If you do not have experience in these areas, please explain why you are interested in gaining experience. You may also address your personal, professional, academic, and/or community goals.
2) Unofficial transcript
In the online application form, you will be asked to upload an electronic copy of your unofficial transcript. This can be a pdf or jpeg file.
3) Curriculum Vitae
In the online application form, you will be asked to upload an electronic copy of your CV.
4) Two letters of recommendation
In the online application form, you will be asked to provide the names and contact information of two references whom we will receive your letters of recommendation from. One of these letters may be a statement from a community leader who can speak to your involvement in the community. At least one letter should come from an instructor either at a high school or college who can speak to your academic and research potential. Recommenders will submit letters via the link provided on the REU How to Apply webpage (below). Letters of recommendation are due by November 15th.

In your letter, we would like to ask you to address the following based on your knowledge and experience working with the student:
- Student’s ability to participate in prepared coursework and activities.
- Student’s interest and/or experience working with languages (language learning, cultural practices, linguistic study).
- Student’s interest and/or experience in pursuing STEM education.
- Student’s ability to abstain from alcohol and substance abuse and conduct oneself in a professional manner within the program.
- Student’s abilities and work ethic, providing specific examples when possible.
