Within the Gospel of Thomas consists a collection of sayings attributed to Jesus that has him revealing the secret to salvation through parables. For example in passage 44 Jesus is to have said “Whoever blasphemes the Father, it will be forgiven him, and whoever blasphemes the Son, it will be forgiven him, but he who blasphemes the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven either on earth or in Heaven.” The Father is God while Jesus is proclaiming himself as the Son, and its through teachings like these that make up the Gospel of Thomas. There isn’t a description of the birth, the death, or the resurrection to be found in the Gospel of Thomas but instead its full of sayings from Jesus. Jesus doesn’t fully explain what he is, however the idea of him being an angel or simply just a human is ruled out due to the secret Jesus passed on to Thomas in passage 13. Jesus teachings go further to describe the material world and the heavenly realm. He, in passage 3, describes the material world, or the body, as a form of poverty for the soul. The soul desires and belongs in the world of light, the heavenly realm, but is trapped within the material world that is the earth and the body. In his teachings for salvation ties closely to the passage found in the beginning that claims if you understand what message Jesus is preaching one will not die. In passages such as 63, 64, 3, and 25-27 shows how one can reach salvation through loving ones neighbor, being generous, and separating the bodily desires from spirituality. The human condition then to Jesus is that human bodies desire materialistic things which is why it can’t ever ascend to the heavenly realm. The early heresiologist would find this gospel heretical because it promotes a salvation that is vastly different than the proto-orthodox groups. Additionally the Thomas group promotes a salvation that doesn’t depend on Jesus dying and being resurrected, but one that revolves around the teachings Jesus imparted.
