Arius, a presbyter during the early fourth century held the belief the controversial belief that Jesus was a divine creation of God going against the orthodox belief of the Holy Trinity. The Holy Trinity comprising of God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit all encompassing the same God was the ultimate and divine truth. Arius preached that “the Word of God, who was enfleshed in Jesus, was subordinate to or less than the Father” (Lynch 164). Arius viewed death and salvation as an act that merges the two essences of the universe, the human essence and the divine essence. In a letter that Arius wrote addressing Alexander on his beliefs he writes, “[God] alone has neither equal nor like, none comparable in glory” (Ehrman 36).

Arius’ main enemy was the Bishop Alexander of Alexandria. Alexander adhered to the very strict orthodox belief of the Trinity. In his rebuttal letter he focuses on the topic of the eternal essence and existence of God. Since Alexander believes that Jesus and God are the same being, Arius’ claims of Jesus and God being two distinct and different beings means that at one point, Jesus did not exist, therefore, stating that at one point the believed eternal God has not always existed. In the letter he writes, “who say that there was a time when the Son of God did not exist and that the one who did not exist previously came to later” (Ehrman 39). He is completely shocked and furious at the slightest notion that God has not always existed and is not in fact an eternal being. Alexander also states that the Arinists believes that Jesus was God’s greatest creation and his crowing gift to the world, but also that Jesus, the Son of God was susceptible to corruption and is “capable of virtue and of evil” (Ehrman 39).

In his defense, Alexander employed ad hominem to discredit his opponents teachings. He calls Arius and his followers “wretches” and “devious and deranged; they are divisive, mischievous, deceitful…and embedded in a chain of heretical predecessors” (Ehrman 38). It is clear that Alexander is directly attacking Arius and his followers and not their theology. Alexander preaches that The Trinity,God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit is the ultimate truth. He preaches that Jesus is of equal footing to God and is the same being. He defends his claims by stating that Arius and his followers have misinterpreted several bible scriptures. For instance the teachings of John, “In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God” (Ehrman 39) Arius and his followers view the Word as Jesus and so they claim that John is saying that the Word (Jesus) and God were two different things. Alexander then begs the question, “For if all things came to be through him. what use would have been to those coming into being when he did not yet exist? (Ehrman 39). Alexander is questioning what use would God have been to those created prior to Jesus. Alexander relies on his reasoning to discredit and prove the interpretations of Arius and his followers to be false.
