For many people outside of religions it is easy to get tangled in which religion has what requirements and the different traditions and initiations of each sect to vary. For example many people do not know the differences between Lutherans and Catholics today. Rome had the same problem for about 300 years during the commencement of Christianity. They understood what the Jewish people required for their strict religion and let them observe it as long as they paid their taxes and didn’t say anything bad about the emperor. As Lynch pointed out, the Roman authorities tended to shield the Jewish people from a lot of the scuffles with the pagans. However he also points out that when the Roman officiates saw the dissent in Judaism they blamed the leaders because of their terrible leadership skills, not being able to squash the rebellion. Ehrman points out that the Christians were seen as antisocial, they went off and participated in their own rituals instead of participating in the cultic ceremonies of the Romans. Ehrman goes on to say that Pliny was not pleased to see the Christians acting so unusually and executed them if they did not worship the cultic Roman image. Lynch points out that Pliny was a “…sophisticated Roman writer… “felt condemned by the young Christians. Pliny would ask the if they were Christians over and over with accompanying threats of punishment until they admit that they were not a Christian anymore. Pliny sends a letter of all that he is doing to the Christians to Emperor Trajan. He replied saying that he’s doing the right thing, just not to hunt them down, but if they are charged with something, have them make prayers to the Roman gods to prove that they aren’t Christians. Basically they don’t want it to seem like they’re hunting them down. However if they can make Christians look like they’re against Roman rule, they can execute and/or torture them. This frame of mind shows that the Emperor and Pliny wanted to get rid of the Christians but didn’t want to incite a riot or look like they’re singling out a riot because Rome tended to be tolerable of everyone’s religions and customs. The persecution by the Romans has an incredible significance to Ignatius. He is a bishop of Antioch in Syria. He writes these letters on the way to his trial and death in Rome. It is incredibly powerful because of his highlighting on what a great honorable sacrifice it would be to be a martyr for God. Stating powerfully in 4:2 “Rather, coax the wild beasts, that they may become a tomb for me and leave no part of my body behind, that I may burden no one once I have died. Then I will truly be a disciple of Jesus Christ…” This is important because the persecution from the Romans isn’t discouraging the Christians at all, in fact it is achieving the opposite, it’s encouraging them and Ignatius is encouraging martyrdom as the ultimate sacrifice for God. From my perspective Ignatius doesn’t see this world as it is, he sees it more of a temporary state in 8:1 he states “I no longer desire to live like a human; and I will succeed…” He is ready to move on into heaven.
