During the second century many Christians were executed for their refusal to worship the emperor and pagan gods, and to deny Jesus. The Christians did not receive special pardon from the worship of idols because they were not a traditionally established religion like Judaism. Christianity was then seen as a threat to the Roman Empire because the refusal to worship the emperor or the gods essentially meant they were against the prosperity of the Roman Empire. Christians did not see the executions as just punishment for their mutiny, but rather as a chance to mimic the death of Jesus.
In The Martyrdom of Perpetua and Felicitas, the martyrs are steadfast and bold in their faith to the point of execution. Throughout the story, the author expresses the martyrs’ joy during their torture and imprisonment. The author says that they marched into the amphitheater “trembling, if at all, with joy rather than fear.” (18) The martyrs were readily excited and overjoyed to “share in the Lord’s sufferings.” (18) Dying for their faith was seen as a noble and heroic death that was honored among others.
Suffering for Christ’s sake is a common theme in the book of Acts and throughout the New Testament. In Acts chapter 5, some of the apostles were persecuted for spreading the gospel of Jesus in the temple. After the apostles were flogged for continuing to speak of Jesus, “they rejoiced that they were considered worthy to suffer dishonor for the sake of the name.” (Acts 5:41) They then continued to spread the gospel to all that would listen. Later in Acts 9:16, Ananias is told that Paul will suffer for the sake of Jesus’ name. Paul even writes in Philippians 1 about his imprisonment and suffering, and says, “For to me, living is Christ and dying is gain.” (Phil. 1:21) Paul means that death would be joyful because he will be in the presence of Jesus. The book of 1 Peter speaks a lot of joy during suffering. “But even if you should suffer for the sake of righteousness, you are blessed…” (1Peter 3:14) The idea of joy during suffering and suffering for the sake of Jesus is seen all throughout the New Testament as the gospel is spread and either received or rejected. These teachings in the New Testament are reflected in the stories and actions of these martyrs. They considered dying for their faith to be a blessing and had joy during their suffering because they had hope in an afterlife with Jesus.
