“The gospel of truth is joy to those who have received from the Father of truth the gift of knowing him…” The first sentence of The Gospel of Truth blatantly describes that the only way to true happiness and success is to know God and receive grace through the power of the word of Christ. Through explanations of the created world, the human condition, Jesus’ role in bringing salvation, and the importance of gnosis, this sermon describes the view of gnostics.
The created world (the All) was meant for people to decide between ignorance or ascension through finding the truths of God. “Since the perfection of the All is in the Father, it is necessary for the All to ascend to him. Therefore, if one has knowledge, he gets what belongs to him and draws it to himself. For he who is ignorant, is deficient, and it is a great deficiency, since he lacks that which will make him perfect”. The gnostic view envisions the world as a place used for finding the grace of God and coming to know him through attaining salvation.
“After all these came also the little children, those who possess the knowledge of the Father. When they became strong they were taught the aspects of the Father’s face. They came to know and they were known. They were glorified and they gave glory”. Since humans are ignorant of the Father, they don’t attain gnosis in their hearts unless they work on receiving grace and accepting the ways of life that God has set out for them. Through those acts, humans can eventually become part of the Father and attain what they have been searching for throughout their lives.
Jesus, later known as Jesus Christ, teaches those who “will learn” and who are capable of learning through his actions and most importantly, his words. He teaches that God is the truth, “For the Father is sweet and his will is good. He knows the things that are yours, so that you may rest yourselves in them. For by the fruits one knows the things that are yours, that they are the children of the Father, and one knows his aroma, that you originate from the grace of his countenance”. He enlightened people by showing them the way to true happiness and joy, which is the ultimate goal of gnostics. He became “a fruit of the knowledge of the Father” and by being such an important person and performing such amazing actions, he persuaded many to join in his journey to salvation.
