In Galatia are two ‘wings’ of Christianity at this time in history. The two are closely intertwined and there is much debate on which is the doctrine that Jesus planned. The Jewish people also had social customs not to associate themselves with the people who weren’t The other wing, that Paul sides on are those Gentiles who want to convert to Christianity. Paul was trying to broaden their view of Christianity. He argues that in Christianity and in Jesus, there is no difference between the Jewish-Christians and the Gentile-Christians. He states so in Galatians 3:28 “There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus.”
Paul wrote the letter of Galatians for a number of reasons. The pdf stated that “This letter is rather Paul’s defense of his Gentile mission as a whole and the particular understanding of the law which it was based.” In other words Paul was on the Gentile-Christian side and this was his letter convincing both them and his enemies in Antioch that new Christians didn’t need to practice the mosaic laws.
The letter to the Galatians can be split up into 3 parts. First Paul reviewing his life, second Paul’s vision of the gospel, the third presents the practical application of Paul’s views. Paul including a brief description of his life in 1:1-24 was important to have because it’s important to know that he is a big leader in the Christian movement. He wouldn’t have any hold saying anything if he didn’t have any background working with the Galatians or any other disciples. Galatians 2:1-10 is also incredibly important, showing the approval of two very trustworthy names in the Church James (Jesus’s Brother) and Cephas (Peter) and their approval of letting Gentile-Christians join the movement without following the entire Mosicac law. Paul included the visit in Antioch because it showed the importance that anyone can sin. James is known to be Jesus’s brother and he wasn’t living like a Jew. The passage states at the end to convict the people reading it, in Galatians 2:14 “If you, though a Jew, live like a Gentile and not like a Jew, how can you compel the Gentiles to live like Jews?”
The Greco-Romans believed very much so in feeling what your passions are and following it, having no restraint. Paul and 4 Maccabees differ very much in their standpoints. 4 Maccabees 1:3 states “Therefore, if clear thinking is shown to control the emotions that prevent self-control, such as the tendency to overeat and rampant desire?” Saying that we should control our emotions and not let them cloud our mind, putting reason over emotions. Paul argues that the balance between passion and reason is self control. He states in Galatians 5:22-25 that “By contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against such things. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also be guided by the Spirit.”
