The conflict between Jewish Christianity and Gentile Christianity

Galatians:

Paul’s letter to the Galatians shows that there was clearly tension between the Jewish Christians and the Gentiles who were trying to join the Christian Community, most of the Jewish Christians were against the idea of converting Gentiles into Christians at the time. Jewish Christians were disagreeing at the fact that it is possible for Gentiles to become the followers of Christ without following the Mosaic Law or being circumcised. Paul wrote the letter to the Galatian churches that he preached and was trying to convince people that being a Christian is “faith working through love” instead of having to be circumcised—Also, the letter is wrote to defense his apostolic authority as well.

In this letter, he named many places he visited during his own missionary career such as Arabia, Jerusalem, Syria, Cilicia, and also emphasized the fact that the gospels that was preached by him is not man’s gospel and was received through a revelation of Jesus Christ.

Paul also described the meeting with the Pillars ended with “we should go to the Gentiles and they to the circumcised…”(2:9), which means that they came to an agreement and James accepted the fact that Paul has the God-given right to preach and teach the Gentiles who weren’t circumcised. Peter at first was opposing Paul’s idea of converting Gentiles until God send Peter a vision—and Paul described the situation between him and Peter as “And the rest of the Jews acted hypocritically along with him”(2:13) which criticize Peter’s close-minded disagreement.

In Chapter 5, Paul emphasized the importance of following the righteous teachings through adjusting the view point of those who believes: “For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything but only faith working through love.”(5:6) Paul is telling us that what is more important than the other—and what counts as the faith to the Lord. He also explained that the right teachings: the faith within ourselves, the Holy Spirit, draws us away from the desire from our own flesh—but by following the Spirit, it is not considered as “under the law”. Paul meant to teach us that as long as we are following the righteousness from the Spirit, even without being under the law, we are already on the path of righteousness and are already redeemed by Christ.

In Gal 5:22, Paul referred love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control as the fruit of the Spirit—which reflexes the Greco-Roman values—Paul distinguished the way of Spirit by explaining how self-control and reason of the mind that belongs to the way of Spirit will win over the way of flesh, which is similar to the concept which can be traced back to 4 Maccabees and  Epictetus that self-control and reasons overcomes emotions and wrong-doings.

    • I think this is a class assignment I did years back. Not sure why it gained traction but this was and still is my analysis. Only that I’d write it differently, with more craft now.

      • There is no such thing as Jewish Christianity. The two religions are diametrically opposed. Not sure why this is such a difficult concept to grasp for most Christians. Christ was pretty clear with his thoughts on them, and they had him killed for it.

  1. If you ever rewrite this peace I would love to read it. I was specifically looking up articles on why Gentiles don’t have to follow the same traditions as Jews.

    • Hi, thank you so much!
I think it will be fruitful to compare the Old Testaments passages regarding the religious lifestyle/regulations with the New Testaments passages, especially Paul’s letters and Jesus’ preachings such as the parables and the sermons. The subtle (and sometimes radical) differences might bring out the important differences and many similarities in Jewish Christianity and Gentile Christianity.

  2. It seems christians have strayed towards paganism, worldly, Babylon. That’s a huge difference between the two.

  3. Christianity places a strong emphasis on having faith in Jesus Christ, who offers grace, strength, and direction for leading a virtuous life. Judaism stresses the value of abiding by the ideals of social justice as outlined in the Bible in order to live a life of holiness through fulfilling mitzvot. 14. Good post and a nice summation of the problem. My only problem with the analysis is given that much of the population joined the chorus of deregulatory mythology, given vested interest is inclined toward perpetuation of the current system and given a lack of a popular cheerleader for your arguments, I’m not seeing much in the way of change. I would really love to guest post on your blog . Some really nice stuff on this web site , I love it. Im no expert, but I consider you just made the best point. You naturally know what youre speaking about, and I can really get behind that. Thanks for being so upfront and so sincere.

  15. “Biblical” refers to anything related to the Bible, which is a collection of sacred texts in Christianity. It is divided into the Old Testament, which contains religious writings from before the birth of Jesus Christ, and the New Testament, which focuses on the life and teachings of Jesus and the early Christian church.

The Bible is considered a foundational text for Christianity and is also significant in Judaism, as the Old Testament forms the core of the Hebrew Bible. It contains various forms of literature including history, poetry, prophecy, law, and teachings.

  19. Hey, would love to include the Jewish holidays into my future. my brothers family survived the holocaust escaped they were a Jewish family within Germany and escaped when the Nazis were occupying. The Jewish holidays have a great meaning because my brother would not be here today if God had not provided a miracle. And have celebrated some of the holidays in the feasts with my old church, and have celebrated Hanukkah with some good friends. How do you think I could incorporate that through the future as those holidays do have a lot of meaning the Jewish people are my brothers and sisters. I see the holidays as they are, and understand what the Jewish people have gone through and their history. I am not Jewish but have a very close in special connection to the Jewish people and the holidays truly have semblance and mean a lot.
Is there a way to incorporate that into family life in the future and a proper way to incorporate that. As I truly feel, I am being called to that.
