A Newly-Discovered Fragment of Mark?

754130-b32c42c6-a4eb-11e4-b988-694a6302ad1fA recent report by New Testament scholar Craig Evans argues that a team of archaeologists have discovered a fragment from the Gospel of Mark that was used to line the inside of an Egyptian mummy mask (see the image on the right). The scientists date the papyrus to about 80 CE, which would make the fragment the earliest known copy of a Christian gospel. More work needs to be done, but this is–potentially–a very important discovery that could tell us a lot about the scribal practices of early Christians. Stay tuned.
