Pliny’s letter is very interesting. He claims that he does not know why the Christians are on trial or how to exactly handle the trials of the Christians. I can assume that the Christians were viewed as a threat to the Empire and were therefore put on trial. Pliny then asks the Christians whether they were Christian and tests them by asking them to worship the Roman gods. According to Pliny, a true Christian would refuse to worship Roman gods. Most of the alleged Christians denounced Christ and worshipped the Roman gods and thus, were pardoned by Pliny. Throughout I Peter, the author emphasizes living in God’s way and by God’s standards. He warns Christians multiple times to not live according to worldly standards and that their citizenship does not belong to the world but to heaven. They must be careful not to fall into their old ways and worship the ways of the world. It is important to honor God in everything they do. The author includes a household code to give not only encouragement but also a reference of how they should act within the house. There are sections directed to slaves to embrace their suffering and telling them that God is pleased with them. There is a section directed towards wives an how they should honor their husbands. There is also a section directed towards husbands and how they should treat their wives. The book of I Peter is pivotal in the Christian faith and determining how they should live in a world full of temptation.
