In the pastoral letters, the focus is put on a specific Christian movement called gnosticism. It is very evident in the letters that the writer does not agree with these people and what they do, so 1 Timothy can be seen as written to the Christian gnostics to tell them what living a Christian life is really like; the values, beliefs, what to do and what not to do. Gnostics believed that the Earth was created by an evil god, that humans were made of spirit and flesh and that humans must be self-disciplined and avoid indulgence. The writer shows their disagreement with the gnostics by saying “They forbid marriage and demand abstinence from foods, which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth”, which blatantly says that it was not what God intended for (1 Timothy 4:3). As for gnostic teachings about Jewish laws and beliefs that the resurrection had already happened, there are many verses from these pastoral letters that say these teachings are completely wrong; “Avoid profane chatter, for it will lead people into more and more impiety, and their talk will spread like unhealthy teaching. Among them have swerved from the truth by claiming that the resurrection has already taken place. They are upsetting the faith of some.” (2 Timothy 2: 16-18). The letters were made to inform followers about Christianity and its real practices and to warm them of these false and unhealthy teachings by the gnostics.
