The Gospel of John exemplifies the divinity of Jesus in various ways that differentiates itself from the three other synoptic Gospels. There is added detail about his love and compassion for his disciples and the people of the Earth. He describes himself as being like God multiple times throughout the story of John. This specific gospel starts out differently from Mark in which Jesus is described as being the Word, and the Word was God. It also doesn’t incorporate the story of baptism as it does in Mark. Mark starts out as describing Jesus to be the messenger.
The story of John differs a lot from those of the three Gospels in comparison. Relating to Judas and his relationship with Jesus in John, they have a more personal connection. It gives off the idea that Jesus knew from the beginning that one of the disciples was going to betray him. The verses of John 13:30-21 stating that the one who he gives the dipped bread to, is the one who will betray Him and therefore, gives it to Judas. After he eats it the devil will overcome him and he will have to flee. Whereas, in Mark there is no mention of Judas until Jesus claims that the betrayer is before him and soon after Judas appears with the soldiers to arrest him. However, they both proclaim how Jesus knew from the beginning that Judas was going to betray him. Also in John it is mentioned that Jesus knew his time was coming up when he’d be rejoined with God in Heaven and that Judas was soon going to be overcome by evil and send Jesus to jail. This is a point of passion in which Jesus obtained love for all but he knew that his time to leave this earth was coming and that one of his beloved disciples would forsake him.
When comparing John and Mark during the march to Jesus’ death, they are significantly different. Especially the story of Jesus being at the cross and the last words he shouted before being sent to heaven. In John is states how Jesus proclaims that he is thirsty and is then served wine and once he drinks from the sponge he states that “it is finished” bows his head and gives up his spirit to the Lord. It also states in John how Jesus carried the cross himself to be crucified. Again, another example of passion, that Jesus himself carried the cross in order to remove all sin from sinners. However, in Mark it states that a man named Simon carried the cross for Jesus and that his last words were not “it is finished” but instead asking why his God had forsaken him. This section removes the passion and love that Jesus has for his people. I find it interesting that Mark and John differ in this and wonder what exactly is the reasoning behind it being significantly different from each other.
Lastly in the empty tomb scene from both synoptic gospels, the stories vary in detail. When reading through John, Mary Magdalene was indicated as being the first one to find the empty tomb. She then runs to Simon Peter and the other disciple whom Jesus loved and told them what she had seen. They then all run to the tomb, and Simon Peter is the first one to enter. They notice the linen cloth and head warp lying in a ball where Jesus’ body was placed. It then goes on to say that Mary begins to weep and suddenly two angels appear to her and ask why she is crying. Her response is that they have taken away her Lord and she has no idea where they laid him. This differs from Mark in which the story is described as three women, Mary Magdalene, Mary, and Salome brought spices to go and anoint Jesus’ body but they had noticed that the stone was rolled away and that the tomb was empty. Then a man in white appeared to them in the tomb and explained to them how Jesus of Nazareth had been risen and they are to go tell his disciples of the news. They ran in fear and said nothing to anyone. Again, one would begin to wonder why Mark would leave detail in which was stated in John.
