The message to the church at Philadelphia expresses that Jesus holds the key of David. He has the holy power to open and close. They are called out for their wrong doings which include idolizing false gods and sexual immorality. The message to the church at Laodicea describes that Jesus is God’s message. His faith and loyalty to God makes him the ruler of all God’s creation. The power and authority Jesus has through God is made apparent in this message. They are advised, in casual terms, to get off their high horse. They still need to work hard at being the church they think they are. To the Church at Sardis, it is made known that Jesus is who holds the seven stars, the seven spirits of God, and the seven-fold spirit and graces of God. They receive a “reality check”. Jesus’s authority is shared with the church at Pergamum; it is made clear that his power and authority is a blessing for those who accept his guidance and are obedient yet a curse for those who do otherwise. They are applauded and encouraged for remaining true to Jesus. The message to the church at Thyatira declares Jesus’s wisdom and ability to act quickly when necessary. The message to the church at Ephesus involves seven lamp stands and seven stars, which represents the seven churches shining. Jesus’s role of power is established again here, as he has possession of these stars. Their good deeds and hard work are acknowledged, but so are the things they are refusing. Finally, to the church of Smyrna, Jesus eternal life is emphasized, as well as his coming, dying, and resurrection. He is the first, last, and in everything between. Their state of destitution and poverty are recognized; they are encouraged and uplifted through faith.
