In Romans, Paul writes about both Adam and Jesus and uses their actions to compare their consequences of humanity. Adam, disobedient of the Lord, sent sin into the world through his temptation. Adam and Christ are compared because Adam brought death into the world, but Christ defeated death through his crucifixion and resurrection. Both were needed to save humanity because without Adam, humanity would not need to be saved and without Jesus, humanity would not have salvation. Now, humans can rely on Christ because of his obedience to the Lord and follow behind his footsteps. They are given a new power over death because of the justification of salvation through Jesus.

When Paul talked about baptism, it is of spiritual form. Humans may be baptized into Jesus Christ, who was buried and resurrected. In Romans 6: 4, it states, “Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life” (Romans 6:4). What this entails is whoever believes in Christ and his resurrection may be free of their sin because of the faith they have in the power of God. Sin does not have power over people who believe in the Lord because Christ defeated sin on the cross. People are not under the law, but under grace now. Before, people were “enslaved” to the law but after baptizing themselves in Jesus, they are set free from such powers. This is a pivotal event that Paul writes about.
