1 Thessalonians Question #1

In 1 Thessalonians Paul talks about two regions that have already come to believe in Jesus. The regions of Macedonia and Achaia are specifically mentioned as well as the surrounding regions (1 Thessalonians 1:7-8). The sorts of people who are being converted to Christ, in this region, are those who used to believe in and worship to idols (1 Thessalonians 1:10). Paul also hints that the people in this region have been oppressed like the Jews back in Judea (1 Thessalonians 2:14). The religious background of this region appears to be that which worships many gods as well as idols. They appear to be of Greek descent. Paul’s comparison of the people in this region to that of the Jews in Judea would point to the people being poor, working class people, who may have had a difficult time providing enough for themselves and their families to survive. Since Paul’s departure those who believe in Christ have been persecuted. Paul is fearful that this persecution may lead them astray for the Lord. Paul’s advice is to be unwavering in your faith, and to pray to the Lord (1 Thessalonians 3:6:10). Paul will evaluate their commitment to Christ based on their love for one another and their continued believe in Christ and God the Father. Paul also lists many things that the people should not do in order to remain in the Lord’s favor. Among these urges are to act without lust, do not exploit your brothers and sisters, to honor you body, and remain faithful to your spouse (1 Thessalonians 4:1-8).
