In the book of John, the signs or miracles that Jesus performed were crucial inputs by the author because it shows the reader that he (Jesus) had to prove his worth to the non-believers and the change that shook the entire world at that time. After examining the “signs”, the similarities that they all held was that all the stories changed the perspective of the crowd and their view of Christ. He had to prove to them that he was indeed the Son of God because most people were skeptical of him or did not know who he was. For example, Jesus found a man who was driven away and asked him if he believed in the Son of Man. The man replied that he did not know who he even was. These stories were used to sway readers into believing, like these people, that Jesus was an important figure. These events were also more spectacular and in more detail compared to the other Synoptics to also show the importance to the reader. As for the final sign, the resurrecting of Lazarus, this miracle illustrates Jesus as the Word because for one, Jesus raises him from the dead. That shows the true power of God in one man. He stays away from Lazarus in John to make sure that Lazarus is dead and no one may doubt that Jesus was just healing him from a sickness. He uses Lazarus’ death as his tool for making people believe because that miracle has never happened. The Word of God is reflected in this man because he has the power to raise people from the dead; a spectacular feat and miracle that can only be done by the Lord.
