With little known about the author of Luke, we can tell from the prologue that the information used in his gospel was from both of Mark and Matthew’s gospels as well as Q and other oral stories. We know that Luke evaluated/investigated all material he had very carefully and promised “to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theiphilus, so that you may know the truth..” (Luke 1:3-4) In the rest of the first chapter and into chapter two, Luke describes the conception and birth of both John and Jesus. Both men were conceived with the help of the Lord through an angel, Gabriel. These births were remarkable for that reason and each man was born with a distinct purpose in life. John’s purpose was to “turn many of the people of Israel to the Lord their God” (Luke 1:16) He was given the name Prophet of the Most High. Jesus was born to Mary, a virgin, and called the Son of the Most High. It was told that he “will reign over the house of Jacob forever.” (Luke 1:33) Jesus’ most important role though was to “go before the Lord to prepare his ways, to give knowledge of salvation to his people by the forgiveness of their sins.” (Luke 1:76-77) In these first few chapters Luke has begun to fulfill his promise of providing an orderly and accurate account of the stories of Jesus. In the first two chapter alone he has provided more detail and information then Mark and Matthew did in their gospels, so I would say this is a good start to an improvement to the Bible and meeting the expectations of the gentile audience.
