Matthew revised Mark in a number of ways. When reading both passages, I first saw that Matthew’s was longer than Mark’s. Matthew’s passage was more wordy and detailed, while Mark’s was more abrupt and brief. Matthew gave examples and more reason to what Jesus was saying to his disciples. Jesus explained to his disciples that if they believe in him, they will earn what they earn on earth, in heaven. The prominent themes in the sermon of community life in (18:1-35) are to be humble and remember that everybody’s path is different. You can really only control yourself, but can help guide those around you and that is what you should do. If one takes a wrong path, confront them but just know that you cannot control them. Also, when they decide to return, we must forgive and love. I think Matthew includes this section because it’s teaching good morals and how to be a better person. Matthew is so hostile towards the Pharisee’s because to him they were hypocrites to Jesus.
