Why Remote Sensing?

“Looking outward to the blackness of space, sprinkled with the glory of a universe of lights, I saw majesty—but no welcome. Below was a welcoming planet. There, contained in the thin, moving, incredibly fragile shell of the biosphere is everything that is dear to you, all the human drama and comedy. That’s where life is; that’s were all the good stuff is.”

— Loren Acton, Physicist and Space Shuttle Astronaut

Remote sensing is a growing field that allows us to study natural hazards from around the world that would normally be too hazardous and remote with traditional measurement techniques. A wide variety of remote sensing techniques have developed to study the Earth including GPS, LIDAR, InSAR, and optical imagery. My research utilizes InSAR to study deformation occurring in the area around volcanoes. This site details the research that defines me as a researcher along with my interests that define me as a person.
