Followed by New York and Los Angeles, Chicago is the third-largest media market in the United States. This vibrant city offers the aspiring public relations professional the opportunity to immerse themselves in the communications world.
SOJC Public Relations will travel east for the second year to Chicago from June 14-18, 2016. “The [Chicago trip] was one of the most beneficial, educational public relations experiences I had during my time at the University of Oregon” says Nikki Pirucki (@npirucki), who attended last year.
In 2015 students visited global public relations agencies including Edelman, Golin and Porter Novelli. They also met with in-house communications professionals at Google, the Field Museum, Chicago Tribune and the Chicago Cubs. This summer students will visit a mix of agencies, sports franchises, entertainment and media companies, as well as a corporate offices. Other activities include networking with UO alumni and experiencing the Chicagoan life by attending a Cubs game, visiting museums and cultural institutions, and going on a riverboat architecture tour.
“If you aspire to work in any metropolitan city, want to learn more about different positions in the communications industry, would like to build your public relations network, have no idea what you would like to do after graduation or know exactly what you want to do after graduation, then go on this trip!” says, Pirucki.
- This trip is an academic extension program with a flat program fee. This allows current students and Spring 2016 graduates to participate.
- Students are responsible for their own airfare; the program fee will cover lodging, most meals, activities and transportation.
- SOJC PR can support airfare expenses for students with documented needs.
- Students who need/want upper division elective credits can earn them.
Have questions? Kelli Matthews will host an information session on February 17 at 5:30 p.m. She will share more more information about the program, answer any questions and go over the application process. Join a group of PR Ducks in Chicago this summer!
