“Beats of the Antonov” (Sudan) Movie & Discussion

Partnered with POV and sponsored by The Conflict and Dispute Resolution Master’s Program and the UO’s African Student Union, our Arab-Cultrual liason, Rudwan Dawood, and Intern Shashank Chauhan, have worked hard to bring the critically acclaimed movie, “Beats of the Antonov,” to the University of Oregon! The movie screening will be April 28th from 6pm-8pm in Law School rm 110.

“Beats of the Antonov,” is an award winning documentary telling the story of people caught in of one of the longest running conflicts in the world: the Sudanese Civil War. This war has resulted in the misery for millions and the splitting of Sudan into two nations. The filmmakers, Hajooj Kuka and Steven Markovitz, will take us on a journey of resilience and show how the Sudanese people of the Nuba Mountains and the Blue Nile struggle to keep a fragile thread of their humanity from unraveling through the use of music. To achieve this, Kuka weaves together the voices of militants, social workers, intellectuals, and everyday people. In the midst of a war that is ultimately for the ‘soul of Sudan,’ this movie will show the power and strength of the Sudanese who have found peace through their indigenous customs.

There will be a discussion panel featuring members of our team as well as community members. They hope to foster discussion between students and faculty about the different ways communities are able to overcome conflict and how these strategies may work in our daily lives.
