Comprehensive Exam Instructions for Field Chair

Before the exam
  1. Watch for students’ exam contracts, which you will need to sign as field chair. Contracts are due in week 3 or week 5.
  2. Once you sign a contract, work with the subfield members to determine exam questions. Refer to the policy and details on the comp process for exam length, etc.
  3. As soon as you create the exam, schedule an automated email to send the exam questions to the student on the exam start date. This way you don’t have to worry about remembering to email the exam on that day. Copy gradcoordes@uoregon.edu on this email so exam questions can be added to the question archive at the end of each term. All exams start on Monday at 8:15 a.m.

Arrange a committee of subfield members to evaluate the exam. Exams are evaluated as high pass, pass, low pass, or fail.

Minor exam:

  1. Field chair distributes completed exam to exam committee.
  2. The field chair emails the committee’s decision to the student within a week of the written exam, copying gradcoordes@uoregon.edu so that the student’s exam completion can be recorded.

Major exam:

  1. Field chair distributes completed written exam to exam committee.
  2. Within one week of completing the written exam, field chair notifies the student of oral exam status. Oral exams are held within two weeks after the written exam. Oral exams are general in nature and may include material from the written exam.
  3. Student and committee determine date and time of oral exam and student or committee chair contact Grace Godfrey to reserve a room.
  4. Within a week of completing the oral exam, committee decides final comp grade and the field chair emails the student and gradcoordes@uoregon.edu, so the decision can be recorded in the student’s file.
