Graduate Student FAQ

Q: Do continuing graduate students normally sign up for classes during summer term?

A: No, unless one is planning to defend your dissertation during summer term, it’s unusual to register for summer courses.  If a student has special need to sign up for summer coursework, there’s nothing strictly prohibiting this if department or research funds are available to support it.  In that case, it is contingent upon the student and their research advisor to organize funding necessary to support summer registration.

Q: If I don’t sign up for summer coursework, how do I retain my insurance package and other university services during summer term?

A: Summer term insurance

  • For students with GE appointments in the summer term, the UO pays 95% of the insurance premium for the student and their eligible dependents. See a summary of benefits including current-year plan rates.
  • For Summer 2021: Those who are not summer GEs but who held an appointment in Spring 2021 AND are continuing in their program (or are on approved leave of absence) in Fall 2021 may receive premium coverage subsidized at 80% (subject to changes to the GTFF CBA). Students who have graduated in spring term or who have left the university at the end of spring term are not eligible for this benefit. Please note: this policy is under review and is subject to change or discontinuation after Summer 2021.

Q: Can I plan to take my comprehensive exam during summer term?

A: It is strongly recommended that students do not plan to take their comprehensive exam during summer term, as this could potentially lead to uncompensated work on the part of the exam committee (who are often on 9-month salary packages), along with the necessity of students and their advisors organizing financial support for summer coursework.

Q: If I do need to defend my dissertation during the summer, what do I do? Or say I signed up to defend during a particular term, but didn’t get that done before the end of term, what do I do?

A: If the dissertation is NOT submitted before the start of the following term, the student will be required to register for the following term according to the guidelines below:

  • 3 credits if using any faculty time or institutional resources after the first day of the term.
  • 1 credit if the only use of institutional resources is working with the Graduate School to upload the dissertation and file the required paperwork.
  • Permission to register for only 1 credit will require completion of the General Petition Formsigned by the advisor and department head stating that there will be no use of faculty or departmental staff resources for that term other than the minimum required to file the final documents with the Graduate School.

Q: Is the GRE score required for admissions.

A:  For Fall 2023, GRE is NOT required.
