About

Our Purpose

Many people with substance use disorders (SUD) are parents, but few services are tailored specifically to their unique needs and challenges. Parenthood brings life-changing experiences, which can shape treatment engagement, success, and perceptions of recovery. However, research on parents with SUD has often focused on child outcomes, missing crucial opportunities to address parents’ needs directly. Parents with SUD face unique barriers, including fears of child removal, childcare challenges, safety concerns, and challenges navigating healthcare systems. Our team is working to fill this gap. Through our Pregnancy, Postpartum, and Parenting Engagement Resource Center (PERC), our goal is to support a national resource to improve treatment access, engagement in treatment, and recovery for parents with SUD. To accomplish this goal, we work together with a lived-experience advisory panel (LEAP) to identify and address modifiable service barriers and opportunities.
