Communication is one of my strongest abilities. I write very effectively and speak with confidence. I communicate main points and ideas very well, and I am able to provide details in an easy to understand manner.

  • Written Communication: This term in BA 352, I collaborated with classmates in a team of 5. We worked together to propose a solution to a problem within the business school, and collaboratively drafted this proposal document. I had a large part in writing this proposal, and as you can see it’s easy to read, looks professional, and is very well put together in terms of main concepts, wording, and details. However, the document’s skim value could be improved as to make reading it quickly easier, which I’ve learned is especially important in a professional setting. Another more personal example of my own professional style writing is this memo that I drafted as another BA 352 assignment. The concept of the assignment was the same as the proposal: find a problem within the business school and propose a solution pathway to fix it. I wrote it very well and received good marks on the grade, but there was still one comment on something to improve: “layout could be fixed to increase skim value”. I’m confident in my writing communication skills in a professional setting, but I really need to work on creating better skim value, both with a team and by myself. The only way I can improve is through practice, so I’ll be writing more professional documents in order to help improve my skim value.
  • Oral Communication: For the group proposal mentioned previously, my team was required to present our proposal to the class as if the class were a professional committee of decision makers within the business school. Although I have no way of showing how I did in terms of the oral presentation, when we received feedback from our professor I was singled out in his notes as having spoken confidently. He also mentioned that I need to not present to the slide, meaning I would look at the slides too much while talking. This is another thing that I can only improve through practice, and it should be easy to avoid now that it has been brought to my attention. The slides for the presentation were also put together collaboratively and can be seen here. The slides were crafted with the idea of evoking emotion in the audience rather than just presenting data. This is the first time anyone in my group, myself include, had put together a presentation in this manner, so we didn’t do the best job of evoking emotion that we could have, but we came close and I’m proud of that. We also did a midterm presentation beforehand, and we were able to improve upon it quite a bit in terms of how it looks, how much information was put on slides as opposed to orally presented, and how much emotion was played into. This growth shows how quickly I and my teammates can adapt to new and better communication concepts. Hopefully, once again, I will be able to improve upon this aspect of creating a presentation as I have more experience.
