“May [God’s] curses be upon them” marginal note in pencil
This note, “May [His curses] be upon them,” in pencil in the margin seems to have been made by a hostile reader scandalized by the contents of the source. As Metheny’s letter reports that the source was taken by a Turkish soldier on a punative raid in the Jabal Nusayriyya region before finding its way to a book-seller, one imagine it is at some point in this stage of transmission that the hostile comment was offered.
