Section 2: Setting

Cob structures exist all over the world! Both ancient and contemporary structures are found on every continent. Given the growing possibilities of structures to create– benches, cottages, stairs, ovens, 2-story houses, garden walls, and even entire villages have been constructed by this tactile material. With transportation of materials costs going down and quality of materials rising access to cob is becoming available to more areas, that might have been predominantly sand or had too much clay in their soil.

Thinking about the United states, the Pacific Northwest section of the United States has really become a leader in cob building education, hands-on experiences, and construction of cob homes, so I’ll focus in on Oregon regarding most of information available on this website.  Listed below is a myriad of (surely not all…) cob structures in Oregon and where they are located. Many of these are in public places, but those that are not, do some research before you visit!
