Frames of a Beekeeper

The purpose of this project was to highlight a person doing something that relates to a passion, job, or hobby of theirs. I interviewed my subject while also capturing the work they were doing to create a look into their job that we might not get to see every day. This feature includes an establishment shot, a portrait, two action shots, and a detail shot.

Plan Bees is located in downtown Eugene, right in the owner’s front yard. These two beehives are home to about 70,000 bees each, including, workers, drones (male bees), and a single queen.

Owner of Plan Bees, Brent Hefley, started this as a community service “because the first thing that comes up when you look for removal is an exterminator.” Brent goes in and moves the bees to his hives so they can continue bettering our ecosystem in a safe place.

Smoking out the bees replicates a forest fire, making them move around and more manageable for Brent to handle when checking on them.

One of the bigger hives from Brent’s collection features mostly female bees. Some honey cells are home to eggs, while others are, of course, filled with honey.

This type of hive makes it easy to check the bees individually without bothering the entire colony. Brent is checking if there are any new queen cells in his hive as the bees get ready to find a new queen for their hive.
