Hiring: Cook 2 Position

Position Summary
The University of Oregon’s Institute of Marine Biology (OIMB) invites applications a part-time (1.0 FTE) seasonal Cook 2 position. This position generally works full-time during spring, summer and fall terms. There may be occasional work during winter term.
The Cook 2 leads and directs the kitchen in the preparation of daily meals served to the students, staff, visiting groups, and special events at OIMB. Duties include oversight of all kitchen operations; directing meal preparation, production, service, and clean up; creating prep list for the day; completing worksheets at the close of shift by recording food usage; assigning work to kitchen staff; assisting the manager with controlling labor costs through effective analysis of staffing needs and schedules; assisting with product ordering and receiving; acting as the lead of the kitchen in Manager’s absence.
Work is seasonal. Spring and summer terms usually require the preparation of three meals per day, seven days per week. Fall and winter terms usually have irregular visiting groups.
Special Requirements:
Must have or be able to obtain a current Oregon Food Handler card within two weeks of employment.
This position typically drives a university vehicle for grocery shopping, which requires valid driver’s license and ability to obtain UO Driver’s Certification.

Minimum Requirements
• Two years of cooking experience in an institution or commercial firm serving complete meals; OR
• An Associate’s degree in Food Service Management, Foods and Hospitality Service, or a directly-related field.

• Ability to provide excellent customer service.
• Effective time management skills and ability to prioritize duties during rush periods.

Hiring: Cook I positions

Position Summary
The University of Oregon’s Institute of Marine Biology (OIMB) invites applications for a part-time (1.0 FTE) seasonal Cook 1 position. This position generally works full-time during spring, summer and fall terms. There may be occasional work during winter term. As part of the evaluation process for this position, a practical test will be given on recipes and food handling procedures.
This position prepares and serves meals for students, staff, visiting groups, and for special events. During spring, summer, and fall terms, OIMB serves three meals a day, seven days a week for an average of 25-60 people. Special events and groups can bring the number served up to 110.
Meal preparation will be according to menus, recipes or verbal instructions. Cooking methods include boiling, grilling, steaming, roasting and baking. The Cook 1 will assist other cooks as needed. Duties will include the storage of food, cleaning the kitchen and equipment, keeping work area sanitary, maintaining records, including an accurate count of meals served and completion of a time sheet.
Work Conditions
The person in this position works in a commercial kitchen with stoves and ovens, hot liquids and steam, machinery with moving parts or blades, and sharp implements. This position requires the ability to lift, push, pull and carry items up to 50 pounds. This position requires the use of a step stool to reach items on top shelves. The person in this position enters and works for short periods inside a walk-in cooler and freezer as well as over hot cooking surfaces and in humid conditions.
Work Schedule
This position works a flexible schedule that may include night, weekend, and holiday shifts.
Schedules can and will change depending on the needs of the unit and can include a mixture of a.m. / p.m. and weekend shifts.

Hiring: 2-year Temporary Instructor

Position Announcement
The University of Oregon’s Institute of Marine Biology is seeking applicants for a temporary instructor to teach one 3-6 credit course in each of three terms at OIMB, including a Biology of Fishes course, a Biological Oceanography course, and one other course that fits into the marine biology curriculum. This includes developing and teaching all curricula for three courses, including organizing the lectures, field trips, and labs, and working collaboratively with a TA and education support staff at OIMB.
This is a limited-duration position potentially renewable for up to two years. In limited circumstances, there is the possibility of renewal beyond two years based on programmatic need, funding, and performance.

Program Summary
OIMB is located on the mouth of Coos Bay, in Charleston, Oregon, a 2.5 hour drive from the main UO campus in Eugene. OIMB is embedded within a diverse array of marine and estuarine habitats, ranging from the highest-energy rocky shores and the open ocean to the calmest of salt marshes or a busy marina hosting productive fisheries. Eastern Pacific Ocean biodiversity is rich, exciting, and full of opportunities for fundamental discovery or applied science. The Institute is an optimal site for research and teaching, with a resident faculty, graduate program, and a well-developed, popular, and rigorous undergraduate major in Marine Biology.
