intro

Welcome to the Oregon Documentary Project

The Oregon Documentary Project is a unique body of cinematic work that captures and disseminates the culture, style of living, and heritage of Oregonians through the medium of documentary film. Guided by the expertise of Professor Daniel Miller, students at the University of Oregon have produced over seventy original documentaries, which have become the foundation for the Oregon Documentary Project collection. These films explore the contemporary issues, natural phenomena, and historical trends that are of interest to the communities of Oregon. Many of these films have garnered Northwest Emmy nominations and been featured on Oregon Public Broadcasting. Other films in the Oregon Documentary Project collection have been recognized at prestigious film and media events such as the Cannes Film Festival, the Society of Professional Journalists, the College Television Awards, and the Broadcast Education Association Film & Video Festival of Arts.

Walking Tributaries

Oregon’s McKenzie River, flowing from the high Cascades down into the Southern Willamette Valley, has been a source of drinking water, food, and recreation for Eugene and neighboring communities throughout recorded history. By the mid-20th century, forestry, construction and development projects have threatened the delicate natural relationships. Protective efforts are being implemented, thanks to groups like the McKenzie River Trust.

Gymnasium of the Mind

The game of chess offers opportunities to create interpersonal relationships as well as compete at local, state, and national levels for the students of Oregon. The growing popularity of scholastic chess provides an alternative to video games and other digital activities.

Faces of Restoration: The Cougar Tower

Faces of Restoration: The Cougar Tower is the story of the extraordinary collaboration of biologists, the US Army Corps of Engineers, construction workers and Oregonians for the sake of restoring wild fish habitats of the South Fork of the McKenzie River.
