Solomon Islands is a nation consisting of six main islands and upwards of 900 smaller islands, laying just east of Papua New Guinea in the Oceania region. Its largest and capital city is Honiara on the island Guadalcanal. Solomon Islands is an area of much historical conflict, being subject of colonial rule under Germany and Britain, as well as the site of many battles between the Allies and Japan in World War II, until finally being granted independence by the British in 1978. Currently Solomon Islands is in a time of peace, however has also drafted a deal with China to establish Chinese naval presence, which has raised the concerns of surrounding nations as well as some major global powers.
