Biodiveristy In Solomon Islands

Many places around the world harbor some kind of endangered demographic, be it a species or culture. In fact, despite the fact that harboring an endangered culture is far less than rare in today’s world, many of these cultures are being lost or dying out at an alarmingly rapid rate. Fortunately for the Solomon Islands, their cultures and biodiversity are mostly thriving. In fact, Solomon Islands is known for being a “Centre of Plant Diversity,” and contains over four and a half thousand plants, three thousand of which are native.  However, in recent years, Solomon Islands has shown an overall decline in biodiversity, granted a slow one. Sixteen species of plants are now listed under the IUCN Red List as threatened. And, taking a steeper turn in the wildlife portion, out of the fifty-three species of known mammals in the nation, twenty are considered threatened. There could be many possible factors, none of which apply solely to Solomon Islands. We have witnessed an overall negative trend in global ecology, and although Solomon Islands has a certain responsibility to protect its assets as a nation, it is difficult to imply that they are the sole culpable party for their decline in biodiversity.
