Ethnocentrism in Australia

Racism in Australia is a common occurrence in the nation’s history, dating back to its origination as a penal colony for the British empire. Much of the ethnocentrism, judgement of other cultures and group from your own, stems from the much of the racism introduced in the colonization of the Australian land. This issue is still a standing problem in Australian life as we see through the indigenous cultures Australia houses.

The aboriginal people make up a small section of the entire Australian population but only a few of them retain large economic social status, alongside this issue their small status leads to an endangered culture with few people able to continue their own traditions. These issues caused by ethnocentric individuals in the past cause lasting impacts upon those who are part of the chosen group.

For the aboriginal culture, their suppression came through suppression of their people throughout history. Early when there were colonizers breaking ground many aboriginals would be eliminated from society. Later in more recent history this elimination would come in a different form with segregation.  As to the preservation of these cultures now and what the Australian people are doing the prevent Australian ethnocentrism, we can see interest groups sprouting in current Australia. Alongside these interest groups there are support organizations and political parties meant to aid in the assistance and equity for these minority groups. One such political party is the indigenous party with a focus on indigenous party rights and constitutional reform.
