The Distrust of The Solomon Islands Government

The government of the Solomon Islands is notorious for perpetuating corruption, as well as in recent years, being problematic for the UN. The government has led its people to distrust it, along with the countries currently concerned about rising political tension.

The decision of Solomon Islands to switch its diplomatic recognition from Taiwan to China was extremely controversial, and it created much unrest nationally as well as across borders. This action stirred people because of fear of infringement and subsequent occupation, and other nations feared Chinese expansion and interruption due to growing political tension across the Pacific.

There were recently riots in the capital city of the nation, Honiara. The main motives for the uprising were as such: the lack of economic development due to the preservation of inequality, mishandling of the COVID-19 pandemic, perpetuated poverty, lack of opportunity for the common citizen, and neglect of infrastructural development.

Solomon Islands also refused to sign an 11-point declaration between the United States and Pacific Island nations, dealing a blow to the White House ahead of a presidential summit with Pacific leaders. The declaration is to allow intensified US engagement. It is likely that Solomon Islands has done this also because of their newfound relationship with China.
