Inequality and Nationalism in the Solomon Islands

With a Gini index of 37.1, Solomon Islands is neither exemplary nor the antithesis of equality. Being that it has an extremely uniform population, and not a lot of diversity, the Solomon Islands’ national concern is not generally focused on the balancing of lifestyle throughout their population. However, that isn’t to say that it is a nation void of inequality. Women seem to have significantly fewer rights and opportunities than men do in Solomon Islands. Systemic misogyny seems significantly deeply rooted in their society, but economic and racial disparity would appear lacking in comparison. Of course, as with every country, you have your elites and common folk, but nothing inordinate. The majority of poverty and struggle in the Solomon Islands is often caused by natural disasters and factors of that sort, the kind that are out of the control of the country.

Nationalism is not to a notable degree in the Solomon Islands. To contrast, looking at much of the population of the U.S., the pride and exclusivity in national interest is paramount in citizenship. Solomon Islands is not so, which is almost surprising, given that they are the “middle man” to many trade deals and international interests. However, there is a circulating argument that civic nationalism, also known as liberal nationalism, is a solution to the corruption issue in the nation. So maybe a little more nationalism is what they need, even though it would be much different than the kind experienced largely in the United States.
