Vanuatu is a small tropical island country in the South Pacific. Historically the islands were populated by native Melanesians. But areas were colonized by Spain in 1606, and later, France laid claim to other portions of the country in 1880. The country gained independence in 1970, and now runs as a parliamentary democracy with a written constitution. Modernly, the country’s economy is supported through agriculture, cattle, tourism, and financial services. Vanuatu is known for being culturally diverse from island to island and its historic influences and cultural celebrations are said to thrive. Overall, I am endlessly excited to take a closer look at these provinces and the country as a whole and learn more about its international identity.
