“Giving a Voice to the Underrepresented Through Stills and Video”

As a staff photographer for The Seattle Times, Erika Schultz tells stories through photography, video and social media. She believes photojournalism has the power to put the viewer in someone else’s shoes, bridge differences, and spur social change. Her work has been recognized by the Casey Medals for Meritorious Journalism, Pictures of the Year International, National Edward R. Murrow Awards, The Alexia Foundation, Best of Photojournalism, Society of Professional Journalists and was a finalist for the 2010 ASNE Community Service Photojournalism award. She also was part of The Seattle Times’ 2010 Pulitzer Prize winning team for Breaking News Reporting.

Nicole Dahmen

“Restorative Narrative”

A recently-labeled genre of journalistic storytelling, termed “restorative narratives,” intends to cover the story beyond the immediacy of the breaking news, and in doing so, to help individuals and communities move forward in the wake of large-impact events. Nicole Dahmen has been studying visual reporting, which functions both effectively and in concert with the tenets of restorative narrative. Her research contends that visual restorative narrative can can indeed be a meaningful future direction for visual journalism.

Jon Martin is an award winning Photojournalist at King 5 Television. He has won two Edward R. Murrow Awards, four Regional Emmys, twice named Dick Terry Photographer of the Year by the AP and three Golden Mike Awards. He was News Director at KGWN in Cheyenne, WY when they won Station of the Year by the Wyoming Association of Broadcasters. As Chief Photographer at KBAK Jon lead the team to NPPA Station of the Year runner up.

“Keeping Journalism Relevant”

Eric Sander is a photojournalist for King TV in Seattle, Washington. He is the northwest regional chair for NPPA. Sander has eleven nominations and four Emmy’s in two regions, including a News Photographer Nomination from the Midsouth Chapter in 2011. He has twelve First Place Awards from the North Carolina Associated Press, including Best Photography in 2011 and was North Carolina Photographer of The Year in 2010.
