Behind the Scenes: Brent and the Bees Plan Bees Honey Bee Rescue apiary in Eugene, Oregon. Each hive is hand-wrapped in insulating material for the upcoming winter. Brent Hefley, a local beekeeper, is the founder of Plan Bees. He works independently to relocate bee swarms to his apiary. During the colder months, bees will work to produce honey inside the hive until they are warm enough to go out and pollinate. Found outside of a hive, this bee died from Chalkbrood disease, an invasive fungus that weakens bee colonies. Hefley checks on his colonies multiple times a week. He makes constant adjustments to the hives to ensure they are functioning.
