How has the War in Ukraine Impacted the Korean Peninsula

North and South Korea have been divided along roughly the 38th parallel since the end of World War II and the cessation of fighting in the Korean War.¹ Since North Korea has always been aligned with Russia since its creation,² back when Russia was still a part of the Soviet Union, they are obliged to assist their longest-standing ally in its war of aggression against Ukraine.

While South Korea has joined the rest of the world in condemning the illegal actions of the Russian Federation, the self-proclaimed “Democratic People’s Republic of Korea” (North Korea) has chosen to sell munitions, such as bombs and ammo to its larger neighbor, according to the US Intelligence Community.³ The North Korean government has denied these claims, however.
